How Do I Measure My Kitchen for a Countertop Quote?

To get a countertop quote, measure the length and depth of each counter section in inches. Multiply length by depth, then divide by 144. That gives you square feet. Send that number with a quick sketch, your sink type, the stone you like and the edge you want. That is enough for a ballpark price. The exact measure comes later.

Most of the quote requests GH Stone Fabrications gets from our website are for kitchen countertops. The ones that get a clear answer fastest all send the same few things. Here is what to measure, how to do the math, and what else to include. When you are ready, our custom countertops team can take it from there.

What should I send to get a countertop quote?

A good countertop quote request has a sketch, your measurements, and a few details about the sink, stove and stone. You do not need every item below. Each one just makes the price closer.

  1. A simple sketch. Draw the counters from above. Mark the walls, the sink, the range and the island. A few phone photos of the kitchen help too.
  2. The length and depth of each section, in inches. The next section shows how.
  3. Your sink. Say if it is an undermount sink (it hangs under the stone) or a drop-in sink (the rim sits on top). Say if you are keeping your old sink or getting a new one.
  4. Your range or cooktop. A slide-in range and a drop-in cooktop need different cuts, so say which one you have.
  5. The stone you like. Granite, quartz, marble or quartzite. "Not sure yet" is a fine answer.
  6. The edge and thickness, if you know them. An eased edge is a simple square edge with the sharp corner softened. Some people already know they want 3 cm thick stone.

Also say if your old counters need to come out, where the house is, and when you hope to be done.

How do I find the square feet of my countertops?

Countertop square feet = length in inches × depth in inches ÷ 144. Do this for each section, then add the sections together.

  1. Split your counters into rectangles. Each straight run is one rectangle. The island is its own rectangle.
  2. Measure the length of each one in inches, all the way to the wall.
  3. Measure the depth from the back wall to the front edge of the counter.
  4. Multiply length by depth.
  5. Divide by 144.
  6. Add up all the sections.

Measure in inches, not feet. It keeps the math clean and cuts down on mistakes.

What does the math look like for a real kitchen layout?

Here is a made-up L-shaped kitchen with an island. These are example numbers to show the math, not a GH Stone job.

SectionLengthDepthSquare feet
Long wall120 in25.5 in21.25
Short wall (from the front edge of the long wall)58.5 in25.5 in10.36
Island72 in36 in18.00
Total49.61

So this kitchen is about 50 square feet of countertop. That is the number to put in your quote request.

How do I measure an L-shaped counter without counting the corner twice?

On an L-shaped counter, measure one leg all the way into the corner. Then measure the other leg starting at the front edge of the first leg, not at the back wall.

In the table above, the short wall is 84 inches from the wall to its end. But the first 25.5 inches of it sit in the corner, and that corner is already counted in the long wall. So you use 84 minus 25.5, which is 58.5 inches.

Do I measure a kitchen island the same way?

Yes. A kitchen island is one more rectangle: length times depth, divided by 144. Measure the full top, including the part that hangs over for stools. If the island has a sink or a cooktop, mark it on your sketch.

Is my measurement the final one?

No. Your numbers are for the quote. At GH Stone Fabrications, after you pick your stone, our team makes a custom template of your space. The stone is cut to fit your real walls and cabinets, not a tape measure guess. So if you are off by a little, that is OK.

Can I see the stone before I decide?

Yes. You can come to our O'Fallon showroom and pick your own slab. If you are stuck between two stones, our quartz vs granite guide covers the main differences.

Countertop quote FAQ

Do I subtract the sink hole from my square feet?

No need. Just mark the sink on your sketch and say what kind it is. We handle the cutout.

Should I count a stone backsplash?

Only if you want a stone backsplash. Measure its length and height in inches and add it as its own section. If you are doing tile, leave it out.

What if I only have a rough number?

Send it anyway. A rough number like "about 35 square feet" plus a sketch or a few photos is enough to get started.

Can I measure a bathroom vanity the same way?

Yes. Length times depth, divided by 144. Also say how many sinks the vanity has.
